A campaign for healthy body image…

This desire for men and women, boys and girls is spreading throughout the world.

We have somehow lost our definition of what real beauty is.

We have somehow lost the natural ability to see beauty in ourselves.

Boys and girls are growing up with distorted perceptions of beauty, body image, and self confidence.

It is time to change what we have created.

Rather than fill the page with my words…

Here are the words of other organizations, companies, bloggers and celebrities with the same mission: redefining beauty and developing a healthy body image.

MizFit's call to health role models

"Beauty for me really does start on the inside. It’s like a state of min. A state of love  if you will. Then, whatever you can do on the outside is all a bonus."

-Queen Latifah

"I refuse to become part of this perfect-body syndrome. I like my body. It looks good on-screen, and it's not because it's perfect. I accept it and wear it like a good dress…"

-Salma Hayek

“More than ever now, I believe it’s so important to look as real and true to life as possible, because nobody’s perfect. I seem to be on a mission, but I don’t want the next generation, your daughters and mine, growing up thinking that you have to be thin to look beautiful in certain clothes. It’s terrifying right now. It’s out of control. It’s beyond out of control.”

-Kate Winslet

“People always ask me, ‘You have so much confidence. Where did that come from?’ It came from me. One day I decided that I was beautiful, and so I carried out my life as if I was a beautiful girl. I wear colors that I really like, I wear makeup that makes me feel pretty, and it really helps. It doesn’t have anything to do with how the world perceives you. What matters is what you see.”

-Gabby Sidibe

“In the beginning, it was odd to have so much attention brought to my body type.  I thought, Uh-oh, brace yourself.  But everyone has been so positive… A woman came up to me at dinner and said, ‘I just want to thank you. Watching you has made me proud of my body.’ I thought, What an amazing thing for someone to say! To make anyone feel good about themselves makes me feel good.”

-Christina Hendricks

“I used to judge myself so harshly. I think women in their 20s do. You’re hard on your body, you’re hard on yourself. But you start to realize that none of it is really all that important. As long as you’re comfortable, the best parts of yourself come through no matter what.”

-Reese Witherspoon

How will you redefine beauty in your life?

Have a wonderful evening friends! :)

  1. I agree that we all need to find a healthy body image, but even those places that promote "healthy" body image is skewed. Not to be the devil's advocate, but in the Dove image/commercial, they want to portray women of various "shapes, sizes, and colors" but we're missing the woman with little to no curves, the athletic woman, short women, Asians, etc.

Also, what does it mean to be "healthy"? We should all love ourselves and we should all take care of ourselves. Given that idea, shouldn't we all be at a reasonable weight and not overweight? Nowadays, it seems like the "real" woman is one that is overweight and curvy and anyone otherwise is considered "unreal" or an ideal.

Honestly, I do think that there should be more body diversity in the media, but I think we need to move beyond the external superficial qualities and focus on the internal lasting characteristics that makes us worthy of respect. Pre-TV and radio, a "beautiful" woman was not described solely by her outward appearance, but by her inward warmth and charm.

Great post! I have redefined beauty for myself as confidence and joy, to put it simply :-) I think there are much more important things to focus on in life than your weight or pants size. Family, friends, and health matter so much more than appearance in the end.

  3. I love hearing the devil's advocate! What would be without the other opinion, right?

I see a lot of what you are saying. Here is my take on DOVE: it's step forward, it's a step in the right direction in terms of embracing women of all qualities. I fully recognize that a company like DOVE is still missing some important elements. But again, it's a step forward for women now and women to come!

In terms of the definition of healthy, I don't necessarily believe that "real" women now are overweight. I do think that the average women is much larger than what is portrayed in the media- that is what I disagree with. Should every "healthy" individual be at their ideal weight? I can dream that! But I don't know if that is reality for reasons other than the obvious.

I could not agree with you more about how we should embrace beauty according to inward charm and warmth! Now that is a beautiful thing!
