Groundhog day + 6 more weeks = sad Jenn

Hi folks!

So I hear Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow again this morning and is now ready to crawl back into his hole for another 6 weeks of cold winter. My response: whatever, he's only 39% accurate and he is a hog of sorts. Why are we listening to a hog I wonder? Funny thing about me though that you might not know: I'm obsessed with the weather. Not in a I want to be a forecaster way but I'm just obsessed with always knowing how to do my hair. See story below.

You see, I was born with black hair which then turned to blonde and straight. The beautiful kind of blonde, silky and straight. But then something happened in middle school. Maybe it was a result of the perm I got in 4th grade but my hair changed, nonetheless. It became wavy and a lot less blonde. By highschool I had bona fide ringlet curls when I let the Texas humidity do it's thing. I hated it. Truly hated it. A poor teenager resisting what nature had done. So sad. The really funny stuff: I used to dry my hair straight which would take about 25 minutes and then put a scarf on my head in order to keep it from curling or getting frizzy. Anyone see the Friends episode with Monica on the tropical island?

That is what I thought my hair looked like curly. Not good for the old self image. The result of this tragic situation was that I knew the weather forecast better than anyone! Call on me and I can tell you what the humidity level was and if the doppler was predicting rain. This was such common knowledge amongst my friends that we collectively decided to name my next dog Doppler. I admit, kinda cute. So that's the story of Jenn obsessing about the weather. This has become less of an issue in Boston and I have finally embraced the curls and waves and whatever else the hair does. And it doesn't hurt that the fiance loves the curls. :)

Well, I hope I made you laugh a little bit.

Today has turned out to be a very busy one and it is only 10:30. I like that though. I have attempted to shift my body clock and wake up earlier each day but I must admit, I'm struggling! I want to be up and at 'em by 6 or 6:30. Currently I feel like death at 6, a bit alive at 6:30 and rather perky by 7:30. The body is a funny thing, isn't it. I have done some reading on shifting your sleep schedule and there is merit to doing it in a specific, thought out way. I have not responded well to the cold turkey, set alarm for an hour earlier situation. Once I do get up I'm fine within 2-4 minutes but those first 2 minutes are so unpleasant! Do you do this too? The minute the alarm clock goes off I'm instantly rationalizing another 30 minutes of sleep and usually sleep wins. I've already got the brain waves going so I might as well just get up! Oh well…here's a little bit of what I have found on sleep schedules:

Who knew, a whole site dedicated to waking up early! Here. Some of the ideas are a bit quirky but there's some good stuff there.

A terrific article from Zen Habits on how to shift your day: read me!

One of Leo's points in starting this process is to NOT rationalize! Haha! I love it. I'm as guilty as anyone. Though I liked one of his later ideas which is to focus on what your early morning time can bring you. In other words, what can you reward yourself with early in the morning that will help the first steps out of bed feel less painful? Is it a tasty homemade breakfast, your favorite cup of joe or tea, early sun salutations or even a rockstar workout? What would make you feel good about getting up? Another point he made that spoke to me is about your goals. You are all beginning to get my drift: I love goals and I think they are a tremendous source of wealth for you and your dreams. My morning time is MY TIME to start on my goals or a particular one that is most important. In coaching, we often call this special focused time your gold time. This is where you can designate time for your most important dreams or priorities. What do you never get to do when you come home from work? What are things that you continue to put off because you don't have the energy during the day? What is missing that you would love to create time for? This is your gold time. Should it be first thing in the morning before the rest of the house wakes up? Maybe! That is what I am going to do. If I could have 1 hour of gold time each day before 8 am, I would make more progress on my goals than I probably ever have!

source

So, I'm challenging myself and any others out there to create your own gold time. I have decided to couple this with shifting my body clock to earlier in the day. But…pick the best time for YOU! What works in your life? Is it a late morning break at work, during lunch, as soon as you get home or after the kids go to bed? Whenever it is, find some time just for YOU and make it gold.

My gold time for this week will be from 6:30-8am. I will start incorporating Leo's techniques among others to shift my sleeping schedule and get cranking first thing!

Well, speaking of cranking. Time to workout. I have a long one today: 1 hr TurboJam and then a Chalean Xtreme weight workout. It's gonna be a good sweat!

See ya!

    Yes! I love colorful Pictures : )

So the hair thing….I was the same way! I used to have this great curly blond hair in middle/high school that I used to straighten the hell out of. And now I'm left with frizzy dull hair. I wish I embraced my curls more. I started high lighting my hair in 9th grade and since then it's been very damaged. For almost a year now I haven't highlighted my hair and I'm learning to love my natural color! (well that and I'm short on money! haha)

  2. Hi Jocelyn!

It took me YEARS before I finally embraced the curls and the hair as is. I've colored and highlighted ever since highschool too. Finally a year ago I went au natural and I tell ya, my hair is so much healthier! I also chopped it all off to get rid of the old stuff. :)

  3. 1. Great Friends episode.

    2. I also feel like death when I first wake up. But it doesn't matter what time it is. I used to wake up refreshed when i slept enough. But now, it seems no matter how much I sleep, I wake up feeling groggy and just DONT want to get out of bed. Maybe I'm not sleeping well. I'm not sure how to figure that out.

    3. My gold time is definitely in the morning! After those 5 minutes of I-want-to-kill-myself-because-I'm-still-so-tired, I am such a morning person. I am so productive, and I love being up before my fiance (who would sleep all day if he could lol) and having the house to myself. It's peaceful and helps me focus and get things done.

I'm going to check out those sites you referenced. Good luck!

  4. Thanks Jessica!!!! I will think of you tomorrow morning when my alarm goes off at 6:15!

  6. Thanks! It was a good one. But my toe is hurting now so I may need to back off a bit more. :)
